Puch mopeds

Along with Zündapp and some domestic brands, Monark, King, Crescent and Mustang,
Puch was one of the most popular mopeds in Sweden in the mid 50's to early 80's.

Imported to Sweden by: Motorlund, Malmö. Manufactured by: Puch Werke AG, Graz, Austria.
This picture gallery shows some of my Puch mopeds. Click on the picture for a larger view.

Puch MS 50 L - 1956

Puch MS 50 L - 1956

Two hand shifted gears, 0.8 horsepower fan-cooled engine, pedal start, half sized wheel hubs and a "toad shaped" muffler.

The color is wine red. If you find a Puch like this with the original lacquer it is almost always red brown because of oxidation. The MS50 looks like a Puch Florida (MV50), but not many of the parts is the same. Note the rear shock absorbers with oil cups.

This is the fundamental construction type for the Puch moped. A pressed steel spine type frame with pressed steel swinging arm rear suspension and telescopic front forks. The design is recognizable in many of the following models.

1959 Puch MS 50 L

Puch MS 50 L - 1959

Two gears, hand shifted, 0.8 hp fan-cooled engine with pedal start, half sized wheel hubs. With the classic toad shaped muffler. No unnessesary chrome, everything is painted black.

A classic Puch model, which many of us remember as THE Puch. It is difficult restore these models, its hard to find spare parts. The motor covers are made of thin material and are therefore often dented.

1957 Puch Lyx, VS 50 L

Puch Lyx, VS 50 L - 1957

Two hand shifted gears, 0.8 horsepower engine with pedalstart and decompression valve. Full size wheel hubs, elderly type of parcel carrier and rear shock absorbers with oil caps. The tank is fully painted.

This is a 1957 model, probably an early specimen. The relatively unusual color is called chrome green.

Swedish type number VoV 1451.
1957 Puch Lyx, VS 50 L

Puch Lyx, VS 50 L - 1957

Two hand shifted gears, 0.8 horsepower engine with pedalstart and decompression valve. Fully enclosed chain case, fenders at the rear mudguard and full size wheel hubs.
Light green metallic and vanilla-colored toolboxes, fuel tank and lamp housing.

To my opinion this is a very beautiful moped with a nice touch of the fifties.

Swedish type number VoV 1451.
1960 Puch Lyx, VS 50 L

Puch Lyx, VS 50 L - 1960

Two hand shifted gears, 0.8 hp kick-started engine, fully enclosed chain case, and full size wheel hubs. Chrome and white tank, and a handlebars cover made out of pressed steel. The small front position lights at the side of the main lamp house is replaced with dummies.

This is one of my latest objects, ready and tested 12-03-04. It started at the second kick, and ran perfectly.

You will find pictures of the renovation at the Workshop

1961 Puch Lyx, VS 50 KF

Puch Lyx, VS 50 KF - 1961

Two foot shifted gears with a drop arm under the footbridge and a 1 hp kick-started engine. Full size wheel hubs, fully enclosed chain case, brake light. Chrome and white tank, and a handlebars cover.

The big lamp house was introduced in the 1960 model; turn the lamp house knob to the left and the small front position lamps on each side if the head light lights up.

A wonderful moped with lovely soft curves.

Swedish type number VoV 1455.
1962 Puch Lyx, VS 50 KF

Puch Lyx, VS 50 KF- 1962

Two foot shifted gears, 1 hp kick-started engine. Full size hubs, fully enclosed chain case, handlebars cover, and front position lights.

The green nuance is called linden (UK: lime) green and vanilla, a rather unusual combination. The usual colors where red or black. I think this green color is a bit special, maybe because of its rareness. This is the last year for this model.

Swedish type number VoV 1455.
1961 Puch VS 50 SKF

Puch VS 50 SKF - 1961

Two foot shifted gears with a drop arm under the footbridge and a 1 hp kick-started engine. Full size wheel hubs, fully enclosed chain case, fenders at the rear wheel, a dualseat, low handlebars and brake light.

The toolboxes could be either red or vanilla. The windshield is newly made, modelled after old pictures. It was an original Puch accessory. The fuel tank reminds of newer motocross models.

This is basically a Puch VS 50KF in a sport suit. A wonderful roadster that enjoys when it may stretch out just over 30 km/h (18 mph).

Swedish type number VoV 1455
1965 Puch Moto-cross, MC 50 KF

Puch Moto-cross, MC 50 KF - 1965

Three foot shifted gears with gear change housing underneath the gearbox, the cric-crack gearbox. The 1 hp engine is kick-started. Full size hubs, mudguards in chrome with inside painted yellow and a grey plastic-material chain case. The fuel tank is mounted with brown leather straps.

A fairly unusual model, although locally it can occur more frequently.
An unreachable dream for many fifteen years old boys in the sixties.
Many of them disappointedly ended up with a Crescent instead.

Swedish type number VoV 1458.
1968 Puch MS Automatic, MS 50 KA

Puch MS Automatic, MS 50 KA - 1968

Two geared automatic, no clutch, 1 hp kick-started engine, with a toad shaped muffler. Half sized hubs, handle bar with fixed steering arm, brake light. The fuel tank is fully painted.

It may seem odd to equip this moped with half sized hubs in 1968, but there probably was some leftovers in stock in Graz, Austria. This model where aimed at the more mature buyers, and the price was kept low. It runs wonderful and the gearshifts are smooth and nice.
The color is called "midnight blue".

Swedish type number VoV 1462
1963 Puch Florida, MV 50 KF

Puch Florida, MV 50 KF - 1963

Two-geared foot shifted cric-crac gearbox, 1 hp kick-started engine, full sized wheel hubs, brake lights, and a handle bar with fixed steering arm.

A timeless end elegant model with classic Puch lines. The color is no 19 white. The Swedish king had a 1962 model and I have a 1963.

Swedish type number VoV 1455
1965 Puch Florida, MV 50 KF

Puch Florida, MV 50 KF - 1965

Two-geared foot shifted cric-crac gearbox, 1 hp kick-started engine. Full sized wheel hubs, chrome and black fuel tank, and a fixed steering arm.

The black Puch is a real classic. Black was a usual color in the fifties and in the sixties. In Denmark nearly all Puchs where black. Wonders how they knew which one was which when time to go home after work?

1969 Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF

Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF - 1969

Tuned the way a cool moped could be in the seventies.
With a four-geared motor from a DS 50VN (Mexico), a high compression cylinder head, Encarvi KL7 carburetor, a thick exhaust pipe, a expansion silencer and a high sprocket gear ratio.

This moped is good for about 70 km/h (44 mph) and is very suitable for veteran rallies. At least you would not be the last.
The original engine is stored on the shelf, and it is not hard to restore the moped.

Swedish type number VoV 1460
1970 Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF

Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF - 1970

A 1 hp fan-cooled engine with a three-geared foot shifted V3 gearbox. Full sized wheel hubs, fully chromed fuel tank and chrome front mudguard.

The yellow MV 50DKF model only existed for one year, 1970. The advertisement stated; Now even sportier. It was no great success. Today the yellow MV 50 is a hard item to find.

Swedish type number VoV 1460
1971 Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF

Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF - 1971

One horse power engine with the three-geared foot shifted V3 gearbox. Full sized wheel hubs, fully chromed fuel tank, chrome front mudguard and a slightly elevated exhaust system with heat shield. "Florida"-stickers is applied on the rear mudguard.

The orange MV 50 is another hard catch amongst the collectors. Is it ugly or beautiful? Depends on who is judging, I like it a lot.

Swedish type number VoV 1460

Puch Florida, MV 50 DKF - 1973

A one horsepower fan-cooled engine with the three-geared foot shifted V3 gearbox. Full sized wheel hubs, fully chromed fuel tank and the new bigger chromed tail-light.

A classic Florida (MV50) in red and chrome.

I bought this a couple a years ago, before the prices got high. The meter reading is 3200 kilometers (1988 US miles).

Swedish type number VoV 1460
1964 Puch Alabama, DS 50 KFN

Puch Alabama, DS 50 KFN - 1964

Three-geared hand shifted gearbox, 1 hp engine. Steel front mudguard, which was featured only on the firsts years models. Two color dualseat, tool compartment under the seat, frame made of pressed steel. Full sized wheel hubs and brake light.

This light gray and light blue DS 50K is the base model for the later popular red DS 50K. On a closer look you can see the resemblance of the upcoming classic DS50VS (Mexico), which was introduced in 1968.

Swedish type number VoV 1456
1966 Puch Alabama, DS 50 KFN

Puch Alabama, DS 50 KFN - 1966

The one horsepower engine with the three-geared foot shifted cric-crac gearbox with the gearchange housing underneath the engine unit. The fuel tank is half painted, two color dualseat, front mudguard made out of plastic and a brake light.

This grey and white moped is in a good non-renovated condition. It is a real workhorse.

Swedish type number VoV 1456
1973 Puch Alabama, DS 50 V3

Puch Alabama, DS 50 V3 - 1973

Three-geared foot shifted V3 gearbox, 1 hp kick-started engine. Full sized wheel hubs, fully chromed fuel tank, two color dualseat, front mudguard made out of plastic and the big chromed brake light.

A classic red and white DS 50K, a model for the grown up buyers. With the windshields and stable frame it was probably one of Puchs most durable models. In many countries the DS 50K was allowed for two passengers.

This DS 50K is non-renovated with only 2420 kilometers (1503 US miles) on the meter.

Swedish type number VoV 1456
1968 Puch Mexico, DS 50 VN

Puch Mexico, DS 50 VN - 1968

One horsepower engine with four foot shifted gears. Pressed steel spine type frame, steel front mudguard, handlebars with two "birdpins" and fixed steering arm. Full sized wheel hubs, fully enclosed chain case, dualseat, brake light and chromed crashbar.

A moped with a heritage from the first Alabama (DS 50K), with a Dakota (VZ 50K) fuel tank and with the sticker "4-geared" at the frame sides. Maybe one of the most mythic Puch mopeds. It was expensive as new and now one of the hottest objects amongst collectors. The four-geared engine was a desirable item, and it is hard to find a Mexico with the right engine.

You can find pictures of the renovation at the Workshop.

1968 Puch Dakota Sable (USA)

Puch Dakota Sable - 1968 (USA)

This model was sold in the United States by Sears.

The engine reminds of the M-engine that was sold for racing purpose in Sweden. A four geared 4 - 5 horsepower engine with light alloy cylinder and a 17 mm Bing carburetor. Elongated dualseat, a motorcycle type exhaust system, air inlet behind the side panels underneath the tank, a big rear light and speedometer graded in mph.
The toolboxes are the same as on the MS 50 (Lyx) models.

Because it was registered as a motorcycle in the US you needed a drivers-license to drive and it became no success. Who wants to drive a moped when you could drive a Ford Mustang or a Camaro?

The nameplate has "SEARS" engraved.
1963 Puch Dixie, VZ 50

Puch Dixie, VZ 50 - 1963

The Puch Dixie was sold in Sweden in 1963 and 1964, in white only.

The VZ 50 is in many ways an interesting moped. It has many things in common with the upcoming model Dakota, 3 gears, a similar 10,5 litres fuel tank and 17x2.75 wheel dimension. Even the model number is the same, VZ 50.

With a foot changed 3-speed gearbox, a rugged pressed steel spine type frame, dual seat, telescopic front fork, extra deep mud guards and enclosed chain case, full size wheel hubs.

Swedish type number VoV 1457
1966 Puch Dakota, VZ 50

Puch Dakota, VZ 50 - 1966

The Dakota VZ 50 was introduced in 1966 and this is one of them, restored to original condition.

Hydraulic mc-type front fork and swing arm, black leather seat, 10,5 litres fuel tank, 3-reared cric-crac gearbox, full sized wheel hubs, lockable tool compartment, an mc-type headlight, and chromed front mudguard.

Only the 1966-year model was British Green, a dark green metallic. The year after, 1967, the model had a puppy red colour.

Swedish type number VoV 1461
1972 Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3

Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3 - 1972

The gold coloured was sold between 1972 and 1975.

Three-geared V3-motor, a pressed steel spine type frame, dual seat, telescopic front fork, chromed front mudguard and full sized wheel hubs.

Renovated in March 2006.

Swedish type number VoV 1461
1973 Puch Colorado, VZ 50/3

Puch Colorado, VZ 50/3 - 1973

This is one of the most hard to catch models. It was an expensive model and therefore not sold in large numbers. It was manufactured between the years of 1971 to 1973. A deluxe model of the popular Dakota (VZ 50K).

Open air-cooled with cylinder and cylinder head made of light alloy, a predecessor to coming models. The Colorado model had a different engine and exhaust system than the Dakota, and the to my opinion beautiful color bronze-red metallic.

I managed to find a new old stock fuel tank so I had no problem in getting the right color for repainting the frame. This is one of my personal favorites, when the sun shines the lacquer sparkles like a diamond.

Swedish type number VoV 1465
1974 Puch Texas, VZ 50 V3

Puch Texas, VZ 50 V3 - 1974

The Texas was a low budget alternative to the Dakota and was introduced in 1973. No speedometer, no parcel carrier and grey-painted fuel tank and front mudguard to keep the price low. A parcel carrier was added beginning with the 1974-year model, after pressure from the readers of Swedish fan-paper "Puch-journalen".

This moped was renovated during December 2004 to January 2005. You will find pictures from the renovation at "Workshop - Project Texas".

Swedish type number VoV 1461
1979 Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3

Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3 - 1979

The "Dino Blue" Dakota is one of the most classic mopeds. The name of the colour was taken from the Fiat sports car "Dino".

The "Dino Blue" was introduced in 1970 and was sold in along side with the puppy red. The red had the old style with rear fenders, while the blue had a more modern touch with: Slightly elevated exhaust system with heat shield (only in 1970), higher handlebars, and rubber bellows at the front fork and chromed rear springs. The blue was slightly more expensive. The blue Dakota was sold until 1980, the last year for the model.

This is a 1979-model, renovated in April of 2006.

The chrome crash bar and the headlight protection bars where original accessories.

Swedish type number VoV 1461
1980 Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3

Puch Dakota, VZ 50 V3 - 1980

One horsepower engine with the three-geared foot shifted V3 gearbox. Full sized wheel hubs, dualseat, chrome front mudguard and black plastic chain guard. Equipped with tachometer and chrome crash bar (not on picture), which were optional original accessories on this model.

A non-renovated specimen in its original condition.

Swedish type number VoV 1461
